a part of "escaping" with regard to engaging in a story, is that you feel something different.

That's where the sense of escape comes from. So if I still felt the same way while reading as I normally do, I wouldn't be "escaping" at all.

So even if people say they read to escape, it just puts emphasis on the fact that people read to feel. They just read to feel something different.
